Development of the first electrified Porsche 911 is complete

Porsche has confirmed it will reveal its radically overhauled 992.2-series 911 range on May 28, following the completion of development for the hallowed German sports car’s first hybrid powertrain, which has made some variants almost nine seconds faster around the Nürburgring.

Already confirmed for the 2025 Porsche 911 GTS and Turbo, the new hybrid system is of the self-charging type and designed primarily as a performance enhancer.

Rolling on standard road tyres but fitted with the optional SportDesign aero package, the new 911 GTS is said to have lapped the Nordschleife in 7:16.934 minutes – 8.7 seconds faster than the model it will replace.

“The new 911 has become considerably faster on the track,” said Porsche brand ambassador and test pilot Jörg Bergmeister.

“We have more grip, significantly more power and the spontaneous response of the performance hybrid is a great advantage.”

Details of the 911’s first hybrid system are few and far between right now, but it’s understood the entire sports car portfolio will be treated to new engines and possibly even return to natural aspiration for its trademark boxer engines.

That’s almost certainly the case for the new GTS, which will leverage its electric motor(s) to supplement and essentially replace its turbochargers, given e-motors deliver maximum torque from zero revs.

The hybridised 911 Turbo, meantime, will continue to run a twin-turbo set-up in conjunction with the new hybrid system – a combination that’s set to offer Turbo S-like or even better outputs and performance.

Speaking of the Turbo S, Porsche executives have suggested the current 911 flagship will be replaced by a new ‘Turbo GT’ grade as the Zuffenhausen brand looks to harmonise and simplify its model range, which already includes Cayenne Turbo GT and Taycan Turbo GT flagships.

Porsche 911 and 718 model line vice-president Frank Moser echoed Bergmeisters comments, saying the “innovative performance hybrid makes the 911 even more dynamic” and that the team “left nothing to chance during development”.

While the Macan and 718 Boxster and Cayman will soon join the Taycan in becoming all-electric models, Porsche already offers plugin hybrid V6 and V8 powertrains in both the Cayenne and Panamera.

Porsche said the 911s plugless hybrid system has been developed over more than five million kilometres of testing in all conditions and climates, including the infamous Green Hell.

The upgraded 992.2-series 911’s global debut will be livestreamed via Porsche’s social media channels at 11:00pm AEST on May 28.
