1968 Ford Shelby GT500 Continuation Convertible

THE STORY

For 1968, as Shelby automobile production was transferred to Michigan under Ford control, the GT500 was comprehensively updated with aggressive new styling cues. For the first time, convertible variants of both the GT350 and GT500 were now made available. Although the 428 Police Interceptor powered GT500 was already formidable, Shelby unleashed the GT500KR, or “King of the Road,” with the hot new Cobra Jet 428 engine underrated at 335 HP but in fact delivering far more. Additionally, the KR had larger brakes, underhood bracing and staggered rear shocks. The “King of the Road” moniker for the uprated GT500KR was a cheeky jab at archrival Chevrolet, which was planning to launch a new Corvette variant of the same name.

The original GT500 and its variants remain legendary today and demand for choice examples is fierce, prompting demand for new Shelby-built examples. Built as a collaboration between Legendary GT Continuation Cars and Carroll Shelby, this GT500 Continuation convertible is No. CSS007 and is one of only 20 produced in total. Born a factory C-Code Mustang convertible, it is now powered by a Ford FE 427 CI V8 engine driving an automatic transmission with power meeting the road via a Ford 9-inch rear end.
