THE STORY
Countering Shelby’s 427 Cobra on both the street and race track, Chevrolet’s Corvette received a power injection for 1965 with the all-new RPO L78 Mark IV big-block engine delivering 425 HP from 396 CI. For 1966, the 396 was supplanted by the enlarged RPO L72 427 CI V-8 factory rated at 425 HP but in fact delivering 25 more. Development was relentless, and by the arrival of the final second-generation Corvette for 1967, the 427 Corvette was offered in several tune levels topped by the wild solid-lifter, triple-carb RPO L71 unit priced from $437.10.
A total of 22,940 Corvettes were produced for 1967, of which 14,436 were convertibles. Of them, just 3,754 examples were equipped with the top available RPO L71 427/435 Tri-Power engine, including this highly decorated and documented example. A factory two-top car with the removable auxiliary hardtop included, this high-specification Corvette was sold new at Botnick Motor Company in Binghampton, New York. Retaining the original drivetrain, it is powered by the original, matching-numbers L71 427/435 HP engine, original Muncie M21 4–speed manual transmission and original rear axle. Other choice features and options include the factory side exhaust, transistorized ignition, F41 suspension, an AM/FM radio and a tinted windshield.
Honors and accolades include Bloomington Gold certification and the NCRS Top Flight Award. Documents include judging sheets, a window sticker, the original tank sticker and the Protect-O-Plate. Noted Corvette expert Al Grenning supplied the Corvette’s CCAS engine pad, trim tag and Protect-O-Plate verifications, and the NCRS issued the confirmation of the vehicle’s original General Motors documents and the accompanying NCRS Shipping Data Report.
