Carefully and continuously improved from introduction, the Corvette matured into a universally respected sports car, especially during its landmark second-generation 1963-67 production run. Endowed from launch with independent rear underpinnings, it gained disc brakes at all four corners by 1965 and continued to feature a wide array of factory-available powertrain combinations. Savvy Corvette buyers opted for RPO (Regular Production Option) L79, signifying Chevrolet’s potent and high-winding 327 CI Turbo-Fire V-8 engine delivering 350 HP. Available only with a 4-speed manual transmission, the L79 remains famous as one of the finest high-performance V-8 engines ever produced.
Core L79 features included free-breathing cylinder heads with large-diameter valves, an aluminum intake manifold mounting a 600 CFM Holley 4-barrel carburetor and an open-element air cleaner, 11:1 compression, low-restriction exhaust manifolds and a maintenance-free, high-performance hydraulic cam—the first of its kind offered by an American manufacturer. On the street and strip alike, the L79 usually outperformed many big-block competitors in a much lighter overall package that maintained the Corvette’s already outstanding balance and handling. In addition to its strong performance and easy maintenance, the L79 option was an outstanding value, adding just $105 to the Corvette’s base price.
This example is one of only two 1967 Corvette L79 convertibles produced in Tuxedo Black with a white interior and factory air conditioning. Power is delivered by a matching-numbers L79 327/350 HP V–8 engine driving an M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission and 3.36 Positraction rear axle. Sold new at Van Chevrolet in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, it benefits from a restoration to like-original condition that was refreshed in 2020 by Harbor Auto Restoration in Rockledge, Florida.
In addition to an auxiliary hardtop, this Corvette rarity is equipped with such features and options as power windows, power steering, an AM/FM radio and a telescopic steering column. Documents for this NCRS Top Flight Award winner include judging sheets, an owner’s manual, a tank sticker and the Protect-O-Plate.
